Conjuring: Last Rites Bows To $187M Global & Top Horror Start Ever Overseas

The latest installment in the Conjuring franchise, 'The Conjuring: Last Rites,' has taken the global box office by storm, recording an impressive $187 million in its opening weekend. This marks not only a significant achievement for the franchise but also sets a new benchmark for horror films internationally.

Directed by Michael Chaves, 'The Conjuring: Last Rites' has captured audiences across the globe with its chilling narrative and strong performances by Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga. The film's opening weekend has shattered records, earning $104 million from 66 overseas markets. This achievement has positioned it as the biggest horror debut ever on an international scale, surpassing the previous record held by 'It Chapter 2.' Furthermore, 'Last Rites' has become the second-largest global horror opening, only behind 'Alien: Romulus.'

The film's success can be attributed to its significant openings in key markets. It recorded the biggest debut for a horror film in 17 countries, including Spain, Poland, and Brazil. In India, it marked Warner Bros' largest opening weekend to date. The movie's performance in Imax theaters contributed $14.3 million globally, with $4.9 million from overseas. These figures underscore the film's broad appeal and the enduring popularity of the Conjuring Universe.

In Europe, 'The Conjuring: Last Rites' achieved the best opening for the Conjuring Universe, ranking as the third largest horror opening weekend in comparable markets. Latin America also saw remarkable success, with the film becoming the most significant horror debut of all time and ranking third among Warner Bros' releases, following 'Barbie' and 'Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice.' In Asia, the film dominated box offices, particularly in Indonesia and the Philippines, with market shares of 83% and 91%, respectively.

Looking ahead, 'The Conjuring: Last Rites' is set to open in additional markets, including France and the Middle East, with Japan being the final release slated for October 17. The film's continued rollout suggests that it may further solidify its status as a box office powerhouse. As the horror genre continues to captivate audiences worldwide, the success of 'Last Rites' reaffirms the genre's appeal and the Conjuring franchise's ability to deliver compelling stories that resonate across diverse audiences.

Honestly, I was expecting more from this film. The plot felt a bit recycled. Not sure it deserved that box office success.

How does this compare to the other movies in the franchise? Is it scarier, or more of the same?

It's always interesting to see how horror films perform globally. Different cultures react differently to the same scares.
